REGINA – A new legislative committee on traffic safety has been formed.
Five government MLAs and two from the opposition will sit on the committee which is tasked with improving traffic safety and reducing fatalities on provincial roads.
2012 was the deadliest year for highway fatalities, with 175 people killed.
SGI says the leading causes of death are drunk driving and distracted driving.
“Everyone in Saskatchewan would like to see fewer accidents, injuries and deaths on Saskatchewan highways, so it makes sense that this is an area where members on both sides of the Assembly can work together toward a common goal of improving traffic safety,” said government committee member Darryl Hickie.
“Many tragedies could be prevented by simply avoiding dangerous practices like drunk driving, distracted driving and speeding.”
The committee will hold meetings throughout the province over the next several months and report on ways to improve traffic safety and reduce the number of accidents.
The final report is expected to be completed by Aug. 30.
