A dog who was brought from Mexico to B.C. is finally going to her forever home.

Eight days later.

Queenie, a two-year-old pointer mix from Puerto Vallarta, was set to go to her new Victoria-area home early last week. She went missing after her leash somehow snapped off while she was out walking in the area of Mahon Avenue and 21st Street West in North Vancouver.

The Puerto Vallarta SPCA, which brought her to B.C., was concerned she was never going to be seen again.

But a small and dedicated group of 10 volunteers did not give up hope that Queenie would be found.

And on Monday night, they found her.

“We’d been out all day, multiple days, this was day eight of searching,” said Shawna Peterson, a North Vancouver resident who has volunteered with the Puerto Vallarta SPCA for years. “We’d seen her a few times, running around and playing in the snow but we couldn’t catch her.”

Then Peterson received a call that Queenie had been sighted in someone’s backyard at 21 Street W and Larson Crescent.

The group rushed out and were able to safely surround Queenie and finally rescue her.

“She’s now had a bath, she’s in great condition, but she’s a little bit thin,” Peterson said. “It was quite crazy when we first got her, everyone was in tears.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Queenie will now make her way to her Vancouver Island home on Wednesday but not before a reunion on Tuesday afternoon with the group that found her.

“I just can’t say enough about all the wonderful people,” said Peterson. “I am overwhelmed by the generosity and help from everyone and the community. People who opened their homes, gave us cups of tea, let us use their bathroom.”

“These people gave up so much of their lives for eight days and all for a dog they’ve never even met.”
