After the attack, police say Cocomello tried to make his way back to his apartment before collapsing on the front steps of his building.
He was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital with serious injuries after being found by his mother. Cocomello later succumbed to his injuries.
Police say it appears to be a targeted attack. No arrests have been made.
Cocomello had a criminal history, but police consider it unrelated to the homicide.
Toronto Police Inspector Ken Taylor encouraged the public to call police with any information they may have.
