The government announced today the drinking age will remain at 19.

“We have heard from stakeholder groups and from people across the province that government should not change the drinking age in Saskatchewan,” said Donna Harpauer.

“While there were also some people that supported reducing the age to 18 years, it became clear the majority urged government to maintain the status quo.”

The issue came up after delegates at last year’s Saskatchewan Party convention voted in favour of lowering the drinking age.

The Saskatchewan Association of Police Chiefs is applauding the decision.

“We know that young people are already involved in a disproportionate amount of incidents involving alcohol so allowing young people to legally consume alcohol would only make it worse,” said Chief Dale Larsen, an executive member of the association.
