Manitobans seek refuge from the snow in sunny destinations

More than 3 million people travel through Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport every year.

This winter nearly 1,500 more travellers a month have taken off to sunny destinations then in the past 3 years, with Mexico topping the list of desired destinations.

“This winter we have definitely been seeing more people than ever before going down to Mexico, which is what Manitobans love. It’s cheap, it’s got a direct flight and it’s hot,” said Liz Peters with CAA.

So far this season more than 120 cm of snow has fallen in Winnipeg, compared to just 81 cm last winter.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Environment Canada said Winnipeg could see another 10-15 cm in the coming days.

With more flakes in the forecast a big boom in business is expected in the travel industry.

“The few remaining seats that are out there for sun spot destinations, they will be sold and the store will become very, very busy,” said Ron Pradinuck, owner of Journey’s Travel & Leisure Supercentre.

Cold weather is the best advertising the travel industry can get.

Journey’s said swimsuits and luggage have flown off the shelves.

“A storm is like money in the bank for all travel agencies. You just know people are going to say ‘Why do I have to put up with this,’” said Pradinuck.

According to CAA, Manitobans spent on average an extra $125 on their vacations compared to last year.

In the 2011 period average booking cost about $1,500 and in 2012 the average booking was $1,625.

But it’s not just weather that has affected Manitobans’ spending habits in 2012.

Chuck Davidson from the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce said along with a more stabilized economy in 2012, people are looking for a more balanced work and leisure life.
