Cause of Panorama fire still under investigation

Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a fire at the Panorama ski resort near Inveremere B.C.

The fire started early Wednesday morning in the top floor of a five-storey condo complex, causing an estimated $1 million in damage.

12 condos were destroyed and several others suffered extensive water damage.

Some tourists, including a couple from Germany, lost everything.

“Passport, iPad, iPod , cameras, all our clothes, all gone,” says Anka Beye.

“The portions of the building that were not affected by fire and water damage have been turned over to the resort’s security team, who are gathering personal belongings and returning them to their owners,” said Loree Duczek, communications manager for the regional district of East Kootenay.

“The investigation is currently focused on the unit where the fire originated and is expected to take until at least tomorrow morning to complete.”

Some skiers participating in the under-16 CAN-AM races this weekend lost all their equipment in the fire.

The ski community at Panorama is rallying to provide them with skis and boots so they can still race in the event.
