A container ship is currently adrift off the B.C. coast after an engine fire Thursday.
The MOL Prestige, which is 293 metres long, is adrift approximately 207 nautical miles off Haida Gwaii.
Speaking for the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, John Rose says there were a total of 23 people on board.
Rose also notes that there is no threat at this time that the vessel is going to sink or reach land.
“And now the engine room fire is out and the vessel is disabled. And there’s a Coast Guard ship, the Sir Wilfred Laurier is now on scene, staying with the vessel until the salvage tug can get there to hopefully tow them.”
The ship’s owner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines from Singapore, has contracted a tug, which will arrive on scene at approximately 8 a.m. Saturday.
