Rescue operation saves fallen Champlain bridge worker

Urgences-santé Montréal, along with the Montreal fire department, rescued a 50-year-old man who fell from a ladder on the new Champlain bridge superstructure.

At around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the worker lost his footing on the 10-foot ladder and fell into a support structure that is suspended 30 to 35 meters in the air and attached to the bridge, Urgences-Santé spokesperson Steve Kouloumentas said.

The injured worker, after being stuck in the confined space for up to an hour, was airlifted out by a crane and rappelled on a stretcher to safety.

The worker has been sent to hospital with minor injuries to his upper body.

Kouloumentas said the worker is conscious and alert.

A specialized tactical medical team was sent to the worksite to respond to the call.
