15-year-old innocent bystander killed in Vancouver shooting identified

The teenage boy who died following Saturday’s Vancouver shooting has been identified as 15-year-old Alfred Wong of Coquitlam.

Wong was passing by Broadway and Ontario Street in a vehicle just after 9 p.m. when he was struck by gunfire.

He died on Monday, according to the BC Coroners Service.

Vancouver Police Chief Const. Adam Palmer said the teenager was out enjoying a normal Saturday night with his parents.

He was a member of Coquitlam Christ Church of China.

Family friend Melody Li said the family was having dinner and were on their way back to

Coquitlam when a stray bullet went through the car and hit the teen.

“They came to Canada for a better life and ended up losing their son,” she said.

A second person, 23-year-old Kevin Whiteside of Vancouver, died in Saturday’s shooting. Police believe his shooting was targeted.

‘An amazing kid’

Wong’s swim coach says he was a good kid who was friends with everyone.

“He was a smart boy and nice and polite,” Frici Laszlo said .

He said he knew the Coquitlam teen since he was eight years old.

“It was a very hard situation for me and the kids as well when I had to tell them what happened,” said Laszlo.

“It was very emotional, I can’t imagine what the parents are feeling at this time and moment, it’s a nightmare.”

Meanwhile, B.C. Premier John Horgan shared his thoughts on Wong’s death.

“As a parent, I know all British Columbians are angry and saddened at the loss of an innocent life in gang violence in the Lower Mainland,” he said. “And I know I speak for all British Columbians when I say that no stone should be left unturned.”

Horgan said he was moved hearing the Vancouver Police chief talk about the anger his officers feel as they look to bring someone to justice.
