Shortly after 7:30 p.m., the RCMP sent out a news release asking drivers to stay away from Highway 840 and Highway 564 where the crash occurred. The intersection, located about halfway between Rosebud, Alta. and Standard, Alta., was to remain “impassable” indefinitely, police said.

A spokesperson for STARS Air Ambulance, who airlifted the woman, said she was 24 years old. They told Global News one of the vehicles involved was a semi-truck. The RCMP said the other vehicle involved was a car.

Officers were first called to the scene at about 6 p.m. An RCMP collision reconstructionist was later dispatched to the scene to help with the investigation looking into what happened.

Police said a preliminary investigation suggested the car was headed west on Highway 564 when it failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the semi-truck, which was headed north.

The man who was killed was driving the car and the woman was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver of the semi-truck was not hurt.
