UPDATE: Friends identify victim in Canmore paragliding crash

CALGARY – The friend of a man airlifted to hospital after a paragliding accident in Canmore says the victim is by no means new to the sport, and actually has several years’ experience paragliding under his belt.

Mickael Roy tells the Calgary Herald the victim is 38-year-old Andrew Wexler of Canmore, an avid paraglider who has travelled to other countries, including France and Turkey, to paraglide.

The man was airlifted to hospital in Calgary on Thursday with potentially life-threatening injuries, after crashing into Mount Lady Macdonald.

He used a cell phone to call a relative for help, who then contacted EMS.

The victim was conscious when emergency crews arrived, suffering from numerous broken bones.

He remains in serious, potentially life-threatening condition.
