Saskatchewan’s inflation rate spikes in November

There was a big increase in Saskatchewan’s annual inflation rate last month.

Statistics Canada reported Thursday the consumer price index increased 3.7 per cent in November on a year-over-year basis.

Prices rose 2.0 per cent in October.

Saskatchewan recorded the largest acceleration among the provinces.

A main driver for the increase was gas prices, which were up 23.6 per cent from a year ago.

The inflation rate in Saskatchewan was 3.0 per cent excluding gasoline.

Prices were up in all eight major components tracked by the agency, led by transportation (8.0 per cent), alcohol and tobacco (5.2 per cent), and food (4.2 per cent).

Nationally, the country’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 2.1 per cent in November, its highest mark in nearly a year.

The annual pace of inflation has now surpassed the Bank of Canada’s ideal target of two per cent.
