Chilliwack RCMP issue warning about credit card fraud, theft from auto

Chilliwack RCMP are warning people to not leave wallets unattended following several fraudulent credit card transactions, some involving cards stolen from vehicles.

“It has been confirmed that in some of these cases, the credit card data used to fraudulently make purchases has been obtained from people who have had their vehicles broken into and wallets stolen,” said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck, in a statement.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We really cannot stress enough the importance of not leaving your wallet in your car. Identity theft is very far-reaching and this is just one example of it.”

Police said that on January 29, a liquor store in the Vedder area advised police that they’d discovered several fraudulent transactions from July 2012 to January 4.

The suspect buys liquor with a new MasterCard with a chip. The card reads an error during the transaction and the clerk is forced to swipe the magnetic stripe. The magnetic stripe is loaded with another card holder’s information that was fraudulently obtained. The real card holder is unaware the transaction took place until they get their bill.
