REGINA – Regina has announced another increase in cost for its new wastewater treatment plant.
The announcement was made this morning by Mayor Michael Fougere at city hall. The plant was originally slated to cost $150 million, but that number was increased to $207 million back in December.
On Friday, yet another increase. The latest figures released by the city show that the plan will now cost up to $224 million, $50 million of which will be provided by the federal government. The city says the increase is due to inflation, which was not factored into original estimates.

The city has updated its budget figures for the facility.
The new plant will now cost taxpayers $207 million, as opposed to the original $150 million. According to the city, the higher price tag is due to inflation as well as the increasing cost of heavy industrial work.
In order to pay for this new facility, the city will have to dip into its reserve fund. It also plans to approach other levels of government for more funding
“This is a very complex technology wise, it’s a very complex facility where many hands will be involved with the construction, so we will continue to keep the public informed as to what those costs are moving forward,” said Mayor Michael Fougere.
This new plan will be tabled before executive committee next Wednesday.
