NDP would expand Woodlands compensation, Adrian Dix announces

METRO VANCOUVER — Opposition leader Adrian Dix says an NDP government would lift the existing compensation cutoff date to Woodlands survivors within the first week of taking office.

“If elected, an NDP government will lift the August 1st, 1974 cut off date that excludes hundreds of Woodlands survivors from being able to apply for damages,” Dix said in a statement Monday. “Ending this discriminatory action is going to be one of the first acts my cabinet will complete.”

As part of a 2009 negotiated settlement between former students of the infamous school in New Westminster, about 800 residents were qualified to make a claim for a cash settlement.

This excluded students who attended the school prior to Aug. 1, 1974.

Dix said lifting the cut off will add an estimated 500 former students to the eligibility list.
