Alberta launches new 511 road report service

CALGARY – Alberta’s provincial government has unveiled its new 511 road report service.

Albertans now have access to the latest road conditions by calling 511, a service already available in five other provinces.

The enhanced road reports include air and pavement temperature and more than 100 highway cameras and maps for those who have a smart phone.

The maps link to current information on highway conditions, weather information, construction updates, incident reports such as detours and closures, ferry crossing times, national/provincial parks information, and border crossing wait times.

“Albertans have told us they want fast, simple access to the information they need, and that’s exactly what 511 Alberta provides,” said Ric McIver, Minister of Transportation, in a news release. “511 Alberta will help you better plan your trips and make our highways safer, especially during the winter months.”

A new Twitter feed, @511Alberta will also provide timely updates.

The service will be updated every 20 minutes.

511 Alberta replaces the current AMA Road Reports, which had been operated in various formats by the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) since 1927.

Albertans can access several three digit hotlines, including 311 for city services, 411 for directory assistance and 911 in case of an emergency.
