Kelowna RCMP are asking for people who witnessed a three vehicle crash east of Kelowna Thursday afternoon to come forward.
Police received a report of the multi-vehicle crash on Highway 33 near Daves Road in the Joe Rich area just after 1:30 p.m.
Police said that a westbound Jeep Liberty crossed the centre line and nearly collided head-on with an eastbound Toyota Tacoma pickup.
According to RCMP, an eastbound Chevrolet Equinox was unable to stop in time and crashed into the Toyota pickup, which spun out of control after the initial impact.
Police believe the 31-year-old driver of the Jeep Liberty may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.
He was charged under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act. An ambulance took the man to hospital for a full medical assessment and treatment of what RCMP believe to be non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Toyota pickup truck, a 33-year-old Kelowna man, and his three passengers were medically assessed and released by emergency paramedics at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, a 34-year-old Kelowna woman, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
All three vehicles sustained major damage and had to be towed from the scene.
“The outcome of this crash could have been much worse, had the driver of the Toyota Tacoma not taken evasive action to avoid a head on collision at highway speeds,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said.
