53rd Vanier Cup in Hamilton a battle of the titans

The defending champion Laval Rouge et Or will meet the Ontario powerhouse Western Mustangs in the 53rd annual ArcelorMittal Dofasco Vanier Cup this Saturday in Hamilton.

10-1 Laval punched their ticket to the USports football championship game with a thrilling 35-23 victory over the Calgary Dinos in last weekend’s Mitchell Bowl in Calgary.

It marks Laval’s 11th trip to the Canadian university title game since 1999 for the Rouge et Or. The defending champs are 9-1 in the Vanier Cup.

After pummeling the Acadia Axemen 81-3 in last Saturday’s Uteck Bowl in Wolfville, N.S., 11-0 Western will make its 13th appearance in the Vanier Cup. That is the most of any Canadian university football team.

This will also be a rematch of the 44th Vanier Cup. Laval topped Western 44-21 at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.

The Trews will be the featured musical act at halftime.
