Lethbridge police say home invasion could be linked to organized crime

Lethbridge Regional Police continue to investigate a home invasion where two men appear to have targeted the wrong home.

On Wednesday two masked men entered a home along the 400 block of Stafford Bay North and confronted an 18-year-old man. One of the men pointed a gun at the teen and struck him in the face. The men then fled.

Lethbridge Regional Police say the men had the wrong home and the wrong person. The victim is not known to police nor has the home been associated with any criminal activity.

“The evidence suggests these two individuals were looking for specific people, but got the wrong house,” said Staff Sgt. Ian Sanderson. “While the crime itself was targeted, the reality is an innocent person was assaulted in his own home because these individuals made a mistake and went to the wrong place.”

“The level of violence we tend to see in home invasions is always a concern to us, and even more so in this case given the aggravating circumstances,” he added.

This incident follows the murder earlier in January of 58-year-old George Span , who lived only doors from where the home invasion happened. ” We have had quicker closure in many homicide investigations, but we find here that the details become further and further apart, but we are advancing,” says Sanderson.

Police say their initial investigation is calling the two events a coincidence and say it’s frustrating that they have no one behind bars. “Right now it appears to be a coincidence, but it’s not off the radar that there could be a connection established,” says Sanderson.

The first man police are looking for is described as Caucasian, about 5’8 to 5’10, with a big head, blue eyes, a pointy noise and stocky build. He was wearing a black balaclava, shiny black coat with dirty white fur trim around the hood, blue jeans and white cotton winter gloves.

The second man is described as black, wearing a balaclava, a blue coat with a hoodie, black winter gloves and a silver bracelet.

A suspicious vehicle described as a “clean” grey/silver van was also observed in the area.
