B.C.’s first ever Family Day falls on February 11.
But it appears not everyone will get the new stat holiday off.
Employees of Telus, for example, will not get the day off because it’s a telecommunications company, and is therefore governed by federal laws.

Family Day is a provincial holiday, so Telus isn’t under any obligation to give its employees the day off.
There are a number of other companies that fall into the same category, but the union for Telus wants that changed.
“And the people that do work it, they should have it as a paid stat holiday, that they can either get time-and-a-half or double time,” said Betty Carrasco, with the Telecommunications Workers Union.
“It would be nice to have that family work balance for our employees for Family Day.”
