Officials investigating explosion that destroyed Kitchener home

TORONTO – Investigators in Waterloo are looking into what caused an explosion on a residential street in Kitchener that sent a home’s front door flying across the street.

Four people were taken to injuries but the extent of their injuries is not yet known.

Witnesses reported a blast and raging fire at 429 Activa Avenue, in the Fischer Hallman Road and Bleams Road area, just before midnight.

“On arrival it looked like an explosion had taken place,” Waterloo Fire Platoon Chief Robert Gilmore told media.

“The explosion was so massive that the front door and garage door were blown across the street,” Adam Lawson who lives nearby told Global News.

Fire officials have not released any information about the possible cause of the explosion.

Damage is estimated at half a million dollars.

Crews are still on the scene and are expected to remain there until Monday afternoon. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in.

Early Sunday morning, residents of nearby Cambridge contacted Waterloo Regional Police to report a noxious odour in the air. Union Gas investigated the reports from several different neighbourhoods but did not find a leak.
