Freezing rain, snow on the way to Edmonton as temperatures take a dive

Freezing rain, snow and cold temperatures are on the way for the Edmonton area this week, with the winter weather arriving just in time for Halloween.

There’s a risk of snow early Tuesday morning for Edmonton and surrounding areas, according to Global Edmonton meteorologist Tina Simpkin. About two centimetres of snow is expected before the snow changes to rain.

“Taking the track of an Alberta clipper, an area of low pressure will be developing east of the Mackenzie Mountains tonight and moving into Alberta early tomorrow morning,” Simpkin said on Monday.

Environment Canada issued freezing rain warnings Tuesday morning for a swath of central Alberta, west of the Edmonton region.

The rain will turn to snow over the supper hour, Simpkin said.

Temperatures are also expected to drop, Simpkin said, with temperatures dipping to -4 C overnight Tuesday. A high of -2 C is expected Wednesday, along with flurries.

About two centimetres of snow is expected overnight and into Wednesday, and expect it to stick around with cooler temperatures expected later in the week. Simpkin said the coldest air arrives Wednesday.
