UPDATE: At 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, Global News’ web poll showed 61 per cent of viewers like Kevin Karius’ witch pumpkin the most, 36 per cent like Tina Simpkin’s mummy pumpkin the most and 3 per cent like Nancy Carlson’s toothy grin pumpkin the most.

For the latest edition of Our YEG At Night, the TV personalities who bring you Global News at 11 Edmonton every weeknight got into the Halloween spirit on Friday to show off their pumpkin-carving skills.

Halloween is supposed to be scary but Nancy Carlson, Kevin Karius and Tina Simpkin didn’t seem afraid to roll up their sleeves and use knives and other tools to give their gourds an artistic makeover.

“Kevin’s competitive spirit came out,” Carlson said. “He clearly takes pumpkin carving seriously.

“Tina is very meticulous,” she added. “I describe myself as a rookie pumpkin carver.”

“My pumpkin carving technique would be ‘surgeon like,'” Karius said.

“Nancy and Tina looked like they were swinging a machete through the Amazon rainforest,” he laughed before adding he was joking and that the experience was a fun one.

“You have to scrape the inside of the pumpkin a little thinner where you are carving,” Simpkin said. “It makes the cutting easier and you can see more detail once it is carved.

“Kevin’s carving technique? ‘Bring the best tools,’ she added. “Nancy never knew the benefit of borrowing your kids’ carving tools until tonight. My kids’ tools found their way to the Global studios tonight.”

The three broadcasters came up with three very different creations: a witch carved into a pumpkin, a mummy carved into a pumpkin and one pumpkin features a toothy grin.
