The Tenors receive royal honour

TORONTO – Canadian singing group The Tenors will receive their Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals at a ceremony in Ottawa on Thursday.

Fraser Walters, Clifton Murray, Victor Micallef and Remigio Pereira are among 60,000 Canadians being honoured with the medal in recognition of their achievements.

“Getting an award from the Queen herself is pretty amazing,” Micallef said Thursday during an appearance on Global Toronto’s The Morning Show.

The Tenors performed for Queen Elizabeth at last summer’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London and had an opportunity to meet her.

“She was surprisingly kind to us,” Murray recalled. “After we performed she came over and we spoke for a good seven minutes and we talked about her love for Canada, which is extensive, and her love for dogs and her family. We were kind of in awe at how casual she was.”

Remigio added: “She smiled and laughed. We made her laugh. She was really relaxed. It was pretty amazing.”

The Tenors kick off a five-month tour Feb. 1 in Oregon in support of their new album Lead With Your Heart. The tour stops in 20 Canadian cities.
