It may be the weekend before Halloween, but Saturday night will be all about the Christmas spirit. It’s that time of year again – the 630 CHED Santas Anonymous Edmonton Eskimos Game Day Toy Collection.

Last year, the Eskimos’ Game Day drive set a new donation record. On Friday, Santas Anonymous executive director Lana Nordlund chatted about the record-breaking event with J’Lyn Nye and Andrew Grose on The Afternoon News on 630 CHED.

“We had over $21,000 in monetary donation [at the game],” Nordlund said. “Plus all the toys, so once we add up the estimated value of those toys, it ended up being over $30,000 – almost $35,500 worth of cash and toys.

“So that is phenomenal – fingers crossed that we’ll do [even] better.”

630 CHED Santas Anonymous will have white donation bins set up at all four corners of Commonwealth Stadium starting at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

All toys should be new and unwrapped. Cash donations are also accepted.

Nordlund hopes the momentum started by the Game Day Toy Collection continues all the way until delivery day, the weekend of Dec. 16. There are plenty of ways to contribute in the coming weeks.

“We schedule our greeters, we schedule the volunteers that pick up in the shopping malls, Canadian Tire, Costco, Toys R Us,” she said. “And new this year, Superstore is going to be joining us. So within Edmonton, we’ll have them as well.”
