It was obvious that both the NDP and Progressive Conservative parties were hoping with eager anticipation, for a guilty verdict for the bribery allegations in the Sudbury byelection trial.

And why not; that would have been red meat for both of them to feed their ongoing narrative of a corrupt Liberal government.

But, a funny thing happened on the way to another series of attack ads.

The judge overseeing the case, ruled by direct verdict that there was no legitimate evidence behind the allegations and dismissed all the charges against the two Liberal Party organizers.

Not surprisingly, both the NDP and the PCs attempted to put their own spin on the decision, claiming that the charges were dropped on what they called a technicality.

No legitimate evidence to back up the allegations is not a technicality, it’s a statement of fact.

It was the NDP and the PCs that demanded that charges be laid, but neither of them want to abide by the ruling of that legal process.

Heading toward a provincial election next year, the Liberal government has a lot to answer for, but this trial was a farce from the outset.

Wasting time and wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars of  taxpayers’ money on a political witch hunt to appease the opposition parties was the real crime.
