Community supports young boy with devastating diagnosis

CALGARY- The community of Linden, Alta. is coming together to try and help a family who have received a devastating prognosis.

Last fall, four-year-old Brady Regehr was diagnosed with Batten disease, a rare neuro-degenerative disorder that attacks the nervous system. It will eventually rob him of his ability to move or speak, and has no cure.

“He’ll lose his ability to walk, his ability to see, his ability to swallow do everything,” says Brady’s mother, Jaclyn Regehr. “There’s not even words to describe it, to say your child is pretty much going to die. There’s nothing that can compare to it.”

Brady is only expected to live another four to eight years, and while experimental treatments are taking place in the United States, the Regehrs wants to keep Brady home.

“To us, it’s one of those things where you make quality of life as good as it can and stay out of the hospital as much you can and live life to the fullest,” explains Brady’s father, John Regehr.

The community of Linden plans to hold a fundraiser next month, to help buy the special equipment needed to help make Brady’s life a little easier.

“Everywhere I go, his picture is up, and so many people are talking about it and donating things,” Jaclyn says. “It’s amazing what a small community do.”

The family plans to donate all of the equipment back to the community someday, so Brady’s battle will help another sick child.
