School year to become uniform across Saskatchewan

REGINA – The school year across Saskatchewan is set to become uniform.

Starting in 2013-14, instructional hours in a school year must be a minimum of 950 hours.

Currently, there is a variance of approximately 30 hours between school divisions.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Concerns over school hours were raised by the provincial auditor in 2011. The report found school divisions did not offer a minimum amount of instructional time resulting in inconsistency in instructional hours.

The change will allow more consistent face-to-face instructional time and bring Saskatchewan in line with other provinces.

School divisions are required to submit calendar year plans by May 1, with classes starting after the Labour Day weekend and ending by June 30.
