Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver.
The agency is warning that the region’s northeast, including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge; southeast, including Surrey and Langley and North Shore could be particularly hard it.
According to Environment Canada, a third fall storm should begin to hit Vancouver Island overnight and reach the mainland coast by Saturday morning where it will intensify throughout the afternoon.
“This is mainly going to be a rainfall event,” said Global BC meteorologist Kristi Gordon.
“Although we will see gusty winds, it’s really the rain that we’re concerned about. Much of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley will see 50 to 70 millimetres by the end of the day tomorrow.”
The rain should taper off by about midnight on Saturday.
Environment Canada is also warning about the possibility of localized flooding in low level areas.
Flooding has already been an issue this week in Metro Vancouver, creating dramatic scenes and traffic chaos in some areas of Vancouver and Burnaby on Wednesday.
Some flooding issues cropped up again amid Friday morning’s rainstorm, said Burnaby manager of public works operations Brian Carter.
“Right now, I think the area we’re keeping an eye on is the Still Creek area around Henning and Douglas and through the Still Creek down the low-lying areas there,” he said.
“I think at this point it’s not as bad as it was. But as far as the reports that I have, it’s not the level of flooding that they had the other day.”
Carter said the city is working with Metro Vancouver on a long-term solution for better drainage in the area.
