Raymond Caissie has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 17 years for killing Surrey teen Serena Vermeersch in 2014.

In September, Caissie pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 14-year-old’s death.

Vermeersch’s body was found near the railroad tracks in the 14600-block of 66th Avenue in Surrey in September 2014.

At the time of Vermeersch’s death, Caissie was a high-risk sex offender who had been released back into the community.

His arrest for her death sparked a huge debate in B.C. about dangerous offenders being released back into the public.

Even Caissie himself told the parole board he “would like to stay incarcerated for several more years” and that he “feared he would re-offend.”
