Hamilton police identify fatal shooting victim

Investigators say an overnight shooting in Hamilton appears to have been a targeted attack. Jason Scott

Hamilton police have released the identity of a woman who was shot at her doorstep early Monday morning.

Nicole Dragasic, 37, died at Hamilton General Hospital after suffering gunshot wounds at about 3:45 a.m. in what Hamilton police say is the city’s seventh homicide of the year.

The Hamilton woman was found unconscious in a residence on Barton Street and Lottridge Street in the city’s north end.

Hamilton police have set up a command post as the Homicide Unit investigates.

Detective Sergeant Peter Thom says there was no sign of forced entry into the unit. He says two men were at the doorway, there was an interaction and shots were fired.

The men, only described as one being taller than the other, ran eastward down Barton Street.

Thom says it appears this was a targeted attack and he has no fears the general public is in any danger.

He would not confirm earlier reports the woman had been shot in the face, saying a cause of death would follow an autopsy,  scheduled for Tuesday.

Police are hoping anyone with information about this murder will contact them. Officers are in the process of collecting surveillance video from the scene and the direction in which the suspects fled.

Investigators say witnesses can call Hamilton Police or Crime Stoppers.
