In 2009: Liberal incumbent Dave Hayer defeated NDP candidate Pat Zanon by over 1500 votes, 53-43%.

History & Geography: Created in 2001 to cover the city’s rapidly expanding northeastern suburbs, Surrey-Tynehead stretches from 144th street to the Langley border at 196th street, with it’s southern edge slowly dipping down from 108 Avenue to 80th Avenue. The riding also includes Barnstrom Island. It has gone to the Liberals in all three of its elections, though the NDP have shown strength in the northwest section of the riding close to the Port Mann Bridge.

Candidates

Liberals-Amrik Virk: A policemen, Virk is an inspector with the Langley RCMP. Virk has been with the RCMP for over 25 years, working in Alberta, Surrey and Langley. He is vicechairman of the board at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and spent six years on the board of the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation.

NDP-Avtar Bains: A small business owner, Bains is the owner of Rickey’s restaurant in Central City, which recently won the “Franchise of the Year” award for British Columbia. Part of the Surrey Memorial Pediatric Oncology Funding Committee, Bains has lived in Surrey since 1972, and is involved with many community groups.

Conservatives-Barry Sikora: A printer, Sikora and his family run the printing firm Classic Impressions. HE has served as president of the Craftsmen’s Club, and has been the spokesperson for the Canadian International Mailing Association.

Vision-Sukhi Gill: Gill is one of four candidates running for the BC Vision Party, which promises a “One Vision, One World” platform based on equality, and is only running in Surrey ridings.
