UPDATED: OPP recover second body from Sturgeon Lake

Kawartha Lakes OPP have recovered the body of the second man who went missing after a canoe capsized early Sunday morning on Sturgeon Lake.

This afternoon, at approximately 2:20pm, the OPP recovered the body of 17-year -old Salar Alizadeli of North York. He was located in the south shore of Sturgeon Lake.

The recover came shortly after police stated efforts by its Underwater Search and Rescue Unit would be suspended after searching for five days.

A search began around 2:30 a.m. last Sunday after OPP received reports a boat carrying four young men from the GTA capsized. Police rescued one canoeist using a resident’s boat while one man managed to swim safely to shore.

But two others were missing as the search ensued using the OPP’s diver and aviation services.

On Sunday evening, the body of 18-year-old Mohammadmehdi Ahmadi of North York, Ont., was recovered.

Officers spent the week searching for the second victim.

Police say none of the men was wearing a life jacket.
