Bob Layton editorial: Semi floor crossing

Karen McPherson announced Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, that she is leaving the Alberta NDP caucus to sit as an independent. Global News / file

Over the last few years, we’ve seen MLAs cross the floor to sit with the Wildrose, and then back to the Conservatives and even from the Tories to the NDP.

Every time this has happened I have been disappointed.

I think you should dance with the one that brought you, and if you can’t then go sit on the side – don’t leave with someone else.

That’s why I salute MLA Karen McPherson.

Elected as a Calgary New Democrat, she no longer feels comfortable with them, so she’s leaving the fold.

She is not going to another party, instead she is sitting as an independent, which is the right thing to do.

Why is she leaving?

She says Albertans need political choices that inspire them, not scare them. She says health care and education need to be transformed, and she sees no clear path to alleviating the deficit.

How refreshing it is to see a politician not towing the party lines, but making choices according to her heart and mind and conscience.

We might even regain the Alberta advantage.

Let me know what you think.
