Edmonton terror attack: Timeline of vehicle attacks in 2017

The Edmonton attack is just the latest in a string of terrorist vehicular attacks across the western world since 2014.

In 2010, the FBI warned, “vehicle ramming offers terrorists with limited access to explosives or weapons an opportunity to conduct a Homeland attack with minimal prior training or experience.”

While there had been quite a few attacks since then, the number of attacks ballooned in 2017. There have been at least nine such attacks so far this year.

When: September 30

What happened: A man stabbed a police officer before striking four pedestrians with a U-Haul vehicle.

Barcelona

When: August 17

What happened: Younes Abouyaaqoub drove a van that plowed down Las Ramblas promenade, killing 13 pedestrians and injuring more than 120 others.

Cambrils, Spain

When: August 17

What happened: Nine hours after the attack in Barcelona, a group of men drove a vehicle into a crowd in Cambrils, leaving one woman dead and five other pedestrians injured.

Charlottesville, Virginia

When: August 12

What happened: White supremacist James Fields allegedly drove a car into a crowd of counter-protestors after a white national rally, killing Heather Heyer while also leaving another 19 injured.

Levallois-Perret, France

When: August 9

What happened: A man hid a car near a military barracks. As a group of soldiers went towards some military vehicles, he rammed them, leaving at least six people injured. Hamou Benlatrèche was arrested in connection with the incident in August.

Finsbury Park, London, England

When: June 19

What happened: Darren Osborne is alleged to have driven a van into a group of Muslims near a mosque, leaving one man dead and at least nine others injured.

London Bridge, London, England

When: June 3

What happened: Khuram Butt rammed a van into a large crowd on London Bridge, leaving three people dead. Butt and two other men jumped out of the van before they began stabbing people in the Borough district. In total, eight people were killed and another 48 were injured.

Stockholm

When: April 7

What happened: Rakhmat Akilov drove a stolen van into a crowd of people before crashing it into a department store. The event left five people dead and another 14 injured.

Westminster Bridge. London, England

When: March 22

What happened: Khalid Masood drove a car into a group of pedestrians along the Westminster Bridge, killing four people and injuring at least 50 others.
