West Island woman organizes winter giveaway for underprivileged children

WATCH ABOVE: Winter is just around the corner and that means getting out the winter boots and coats. As Global’s Felicia Parrillo reports, one West Island woman is hoping to gather winter clothing for families who can’t afford to buy their own.

Brigette Puccio is busy preparing clothes for the upcoming winter season, but they aren’t for her, she said they’ll be going to someone who needs it.

“Our goal is to cloth children,” she said. “Let them be warm, let them have a warm winter coat, let them have boots and not every family is well enough to do that.”

So Puccio decided to organize a children’s winter giveaway.

On Nov. 11, families will be hosted at Westview Bible Church in Pierrefonds, where their children will be given everything they need to get through the winter.

“They’ll go over to the coats, pick one and try it on over their clothes,” Puccio said. “From there, they’ll go to another section and pick out a pair of boots and pick out a pair of shoes. Once that’s done, then they leave with a care package that includes 7 outfits. Seven matching outfits, socks, mittens, hats and scarves.”

Her church, who is helping her with the initiative, says every donated piece of clothing makes a difference.

“Rather than throwing clothing out, there’s such real need,” said Westview’s pastor Jeff Simunic. “And for people who are approaching the winter and their kids don’t have warm clothing, they’re struggling with how they’re going to keep their kids warm.”

Anyone who is interested in helping can drop donations off at the church at 16789 Pierrefonds Blvd, by November 10.

Or, if you want to lend your time on the day of the event, Puccio still need volunteers.
