Dozens of Winnipeggers and their furry friends did their part to fight cancer on Saturday.

The annual Bark for Life walk, which took place in St. Vital Park, saw owners and their dogs walk for two hours in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Organizer Jill Somers said the walk is held to celebrate the lives of those who have survived cancer and to remember loved ones lost to the deadly disease, all while celebrating a pet’s devotion.

“We’re seeing a bit of growth every year and hearing great experiences,” Somers said. “People are coming forward with stories about how their dogs have been a huge impact and a saving grace in their cancer journey.”

It was the second time the event has been held in Winnipeg.

It raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society’s research and support services, and Somers told Global News the event had already reached more than $7,500 while the walk was taking place.

She said the money will provide community support services for people living with cancer, as well as help advocate for healthy public policies.
