People living in Prince Edward Island and Quebec report a higher satisfaction with their lives than any other province, according to new data released by Statistics Canada.

In P.E.I, 94.5 per cent of residents report being satisfied or very satisfied with their lives, while 94.1 per cent of Quebec residents report the same.

The top three most-satisfied census metropolitan areas in Canada were all in Quebec: Saguenay, Quebec City and Trois-Rivieres. In Saguenay, the most-satisfied city in Canada, 96.3 per cent of respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their lives.

The least-satisfied cities are spread out across the country. In Windsor, Canada’s least-satisfied region, only 88.4 per cent of people reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their lives. Victoria, Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo and Edmonton also reported lower scores, with roughly one in ten respondents unsatisfied with their lives.

Although you might expect people who report a high level of stress to be less satisfied with their lives, that’s not necessarily the case. The Quebec side of the Ottawa-Gatineau region, for example, reports the highest level of life stress, where 28.5 per cent of respondents said they had “quite a lot” of stress in their lives. Montreal residents are close behind.

But at the same time, both Gatineau and Montreal both score relatively high in terms of life satisfaction. The least-stressed city in Canada, St. John’s, is right in the middle of the pack in terms of overall life satisfaction.

These numbers come from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Community Health Survey, which asked respondents aged 12 and older a variety of questions about their personal health, including life satisfaction. This data is from 2009/2010.
