Body recovered from St. Lawrence River near CFB Kingston identified as missing soldier

A body pulled from the St. Lawrence River last week has been identified as a missing soldier, Captain Timothy Bowman.

The 36-year-old was a pilot with the Tactical Helicopter Unit at CFB Kingston’s 1 Wing who was reported missing on August 29th.

His last known whereabouts was the marina near the base where he stored his kayak. During the search, a kayak matching the description of Bowman’s was found, but the military never confirmed it was his.

On Sept. 13, police divers recovered a man’s body from the St. Lawrence River, near the base, and have now confirmed it’s that of the married father of two.

In a written statement, the commander of 1 Wing Commander says Bowman was a professional who was driven to success and the military community is deeply affected by his death.

“Captain Bowman was an enthusiastic airman, colleague, friend, and father who will be sorely missed by both his immediate and military families,” wrote Lt.-Col. Wes Cunningham

He goes on to say that while the OPP says no foul play is suspected, the investigation is ongoing into the nature and disappearance of Bowman’s disappearance and death. A board of inquiry will also be established by the military to look into the matter, which is standard procedure.

Bowman’s family is asking for privacy as it deals with the tragic loss.

“While this period has been very difficult for all of us, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from those near and far,” wrote the Bowmans in a statement. “Tim will be missed dearly by family and friends. We will draw comfort from the many wonderful memories with him.”

Bowman joined the military in June 2000 and is a graduate of the Royal Military College. He is originally from St. Catharines, Ont. and served at least one term in Afghanistan. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
