Autumn officially starts Friday but it’s only just now heating up in London with potentially record-breaking heat on tap for the next five days.

By 3:00 p.m. Thursday, the temperature hit 29.3C, beating the previous record of 28.9C set back in 1970.

“It’s kind of ironic,” said Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell.

“The summer wasn’t exactly warm, it was actually very close to average. Now that we’re switching over to fall, it’s one of the hottest weekends of the entire year coming up with high temperatures above 30C.”

If the forecast holds, more records could fall between Friday and Monday.

“We’re expecting the temperature at least on Saturday and Sunday but possibly even into early next week topping the 30-degree mark. Some of these records are going back to the 1940s and 1950s,” Farnell added.

“It’s going to be a close call but I think at least one or two days out of the next five are going to be record-breakers in London.”

London is not alone when it comes to unusual weather as of late which is due to an elongated area of low pressure in the west impacting a high-pressure region in the east.

“This is an entire global pattern that’s been very amplified. That’s why we’ve seen early season snow for areas like B.C. and Alberta. That through in the west has pumped this ridge up in the east and that’s also the reason why we’ve seen such active hurricanes over the last few weeks.”

The heat is expected to make a few more appearances as fall gets underway in London. Farnell is anticipating temperatures see-sawing until November when he predicts an early-onset of winter weather.
