‘It’s very confusing’: Montreal bans turns onto one-way street

A new street sign installed in downtown Montreal is baffling drivers and residents in Shaughnessy Village.

People in the area say a new sign was installed on Sainte-Catherine Street a few days ago, banning drivers from turning left onto Towers Street — a one-way.

Towers Street runs north between de Maisonneuve Boulevard and Sainte-Catherine Street.

The only way to get onto it, is to make a left turn — but according to the new sign, there is now no legal way to drive onto it.

Berj Vjerrahian, who works in the area, says the new sign is very confusing.

“I’ve been working here for 36 years and everybody is used to turning on this street. I don’t see what’s the reason to change it now,” he said.

In an email to Global News, the City of Montreal explained the new sign was installed because of work scheduled to take place by the STM on a ventilation system; it has been delayed.

Officials say city workers intend to fix the situation and cover the sign until work begins.

At that point, the direction of traffic on Towers Street will be reversed.
