Wab Kinew continues to deny assault allegations

On Friday, Wab Kinew stood by his denial of any assault allegations made by his ex-partner.

On Thursday Tara Hart told the Canadian Press she was assaulted by Kinew when the then couple lived together in 2003.  In her words he flung her across the room and left her with rug burns.

“I can’t accept responsibility for something I didn’t do,” Kinew said Friday. “I feel a lot of compassion for the person who has come forward to outline an allegation for me, against me.”

Kinew was charged with assault, but the charges were later stayed.

On Friday, on the eve of the vote that will decide whether Kinew will lead the Manitoba NDP’s he said he stands by his innocence.

He also said he is sorry to any victims of domestic violence if they are triggered by the allegations around his past.

“This issue coming forward in the media is very painful and emotional for people who have a history with domestic violence,” Kinew said. “I want to apologize to people who are harmed by reading this story or seeing it on the news, this digs up painful feelings for them.”
