Police Taser violent man in downtown Saskatoon

Police said they had to Taser a man who was threatening people and officers in downtown Saskatoon late Monday evening.

Officers were called to a business in the 200-block of 3rd Avenue South where a man was reportedly swinging a chair at staff and threatening them with a machete.

Witnesses said he left the business, threw a sign through the window of another business and then started threatening bystanders with the machete, trying to stab one of them.

He then grabbed a rake from a parked vehicle and started swinging it at people.

Police said he fled when officers arrived.

He was chased to 3rd Avenue and 23rd Street where officers said the man started swinging the rake at them in a violent manner.

Two officers fired their Tasers when the man refused to listen to them.

He was checked at the scene by paramedics and released into police custody.

A machete was recovered at the scene.

The 30-year-old man is facing charges of assaulting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, assault with a weapon, mischief, drug possession and breach of probation.

He is scheduled to appear Tuesday morning in Saskatoon provincial court.

The use of the Tasers will be reviewed in accordance with Saskatoon Police Service policy.
