One of three people sent to hospital after an east Edmonton crash on Friday night has been arrested as police investigate what happened.

Shortly before 10 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP said officers spotted a suspect vehicle after getting a report of a potentially impaired driver headed west on Highway 16. They said the car was seen near Highway 16 and 17 Street in Edmonton and officers tried to pull the car over before the driver sped away.

Police said officers decided not to pursue the car “due to risk to the public” but said the car was later involved in a crash involving a pickup truck at Victoria Trail. Mounties said the man driving the car ran away on foot after the crash but was chased down and arrested by officers.

“The Edmonton Police Service will have carriage of the collision aspect of the investigation,” the RCMP said in a news release Saturday afternoon. “The Strathcona County RCMP are pursuing a criminal investigation for impaired driving and possession of a stolen vehicle.”
