Australian man who recorded boy in West Edmonton Mall bathroom avoids jail

It's an investigation that's quickly garnered international attention. An alleged incident in a West Edmonton Mall bathroom is now being investigated by more than just Edmonton police. Shallima Maharaj reports.

An Australian child psychiatrist caught filming a young boy urinating at West Edmonton Mall will avoid jail time on a number of child pornography charges.

According to WA Today, Aaron Voon has been handed an 18-month suspended sentence in Australian court.

The 42-year-old pleaded guilty in January to eight child porn-related charges, three of which were connected with the incident at West Edmonton Mall.
Voon was arrested on Sunday, May 22, after a father caught Voon videotaping his son as the boy was using the urinal in Scotiabank Theatre at West Edmonton Mall.

The judge ordered Edmonton police to release Voon’s passport, allowing him to go back to Australia under a list of conditions.

Voon’s lawyer said his client suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after he was arrested in Edmonton and has since been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Voon’s long-term goal is to eventually return to his profession in a research capacity in an area that does not involve children.
