DARTMOUTH – The geese at Sullivan’s Pond in Dartmouth might be complaining about changes to their surroundings. Their tiny island in the pond is missing its landmark lighthouse.
The city says the island is undergoing a face-lift – including the replacement of the lighthouse, which has stood in the location longer than anyone can remember.
“HRM staff have reviewed the existing the lighthouse that was on the island and determined that it cannot be repaired in it’s existing state,” HRM spokeswoman Tiffany Chase says.
“So, they’ve removed the old lighthouse and are in the process of a replica,” she says. “The replica will be 14-feet tall, so the process that they are undertaking right now, they’re preparing to install a concrete pad that will form a solid base for a new lighthouse and then of course they will need to transport the lighthouse to the island and get it installed and that is scheduled to happen sometime over the next few weeks.”
District 5 Councillor Gloria McCluskey says “I’m happy to hear the lighthouse is coming back. We have another little house there which will be good for nesting.”

That’s a new bird feeder, already installed, Chase says. “That is specifically for the geese at Sullivan’s Pond and that will be maintained by Hope For Wildlife.”
Trees were trimmed and brush cleaned up on the island.
Chase says if a paint job is needed, it will likely happen. “Certainly if there are other improvements that are on site that HRM can look at doing to improve the overall site of the park, we would certainly look at doing that so we’ll take that comment going forward for future improvements.”
The park at Sullivan’s Pond is a favourite destination for bird watching and dog walking in Dartmouth.
