Province pouring resources into fighting northern Saskatchewan wildfires

Saskatchewan continues to pour resources into fighting wildfires near remote communities northeast of Saskatoon that have forced more than 2,400 people from their homes.

The government said almost 300 firefighters are working with a fleet of helicopters to protect the Pelican Narrows area.

Steve Roberts, executive director of wildfire management, said the worry continues to be hot, dry weather.

There are three out-of-control wildfires in the northeast region that have burned 110 square kilometres of timber and bush.

One of the fires was within three kilometres of Pelican Narrows.

Roberts said he expects a fire ban in all provincial parks to continue through the weekend.

Duane McKay, commissioner of fire safety, said the threat level is very, very high.

“That creates a very dynamic situation for Pelican Narrows,” he said Tuesday.

Most of the evacuees are being looked after in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
