Back to school calls for extra attention to school zones
Back to school means back to bagged lunches, homework and extracurricular activities, but it also means back to school safety. As Christa Dao explains, SGI is reminding parents to slow it down this school year – Sep 5, 2017

Thousands of children are heading back to school, making school zones an extra busy place. SGI’s traffic safety spotlight is on school zones this month to ensure safety in school zones.

According to SGI, no pedestrians were injured in school zones last year, but 24,664 people were convicted for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone.

“If you are driving your students to school, please don’t stop or park near the school entrance, and take care when driving away from the school,” said Greg Enion, Regina Public Schools, Director of Education.

“Most of all, we ask that you obey the reduced speed limit in all school zones.”

Fines for speeding in school zones begin at $140 and will increase with every kilometer per hour over the speed limit. The driver will also receive three demerit points under the Safe Driver Recognition program.

SGI is also reminding drivers to be mindful of where they park or stop in school zones and to not drive distracted. Parents can remind children to walk without distraction as well, and to not jaywalk.
