The majority of New Brunswick students headed back to school Tuesday, officially bringing an end to summer vacation.
Students of Fredericton’s Nashwaaksis Memorial School returned to class this morning, with parents bringing students to the school to meet their teachers for the first time.
Craig Miller brought his son Elliot to Kindergarten and said he had a great time.
“He had a great first day. He really enjoyed it and he got to meet his teacher and one of his friends was in his class so he was really excited,” he said.
Miller said Elliot was “pretty excited” the days leading up to Tuesday.

“The anticipation was building and he was a little nervous going in when he had to leave dad for the first time going into the classroom, but when we came back to get him he was smiling and having fun,” he said.
Nashwaaksis Memorial School is one of the new schools in the province that now has early grade one French immersion.
Miller said he plans on seeing how this year goes for his son before making any decisions about immersion.
Elliot told Global News he was excited to go to school and got to colour pictures. He said he made new friends and is looking forward to going back on Wednesday.
Jessica Carriere brought her five-year old daughter Lauren to the her first day of kindergarten and said it went extremely well.
“She was excited. Her brother goes here already so we kind of knew what to expect and she was really looking forward to it,” Carriere said.
Carriere said they love the school and said her daughter has a great teacher.
“Last night, she didn’t fall asleep until nine which is pretty late for her, so she’s been very excited, lot’s of questions,” Carriere said.
Fredericton High School delays opening
Students at Fredericton High School were supposed to return to school Tuesday, but according to an update on the Anglophone West School District’s webpage, classes won’t start for grade nine students until Thursday.
“The additional delay is to allow the air handling ventilation units at the school to become fully operational. The units help remove dust that resulted from construction this summer,” the school district wrote.
They said staff and student safety is their top priority and that while the building is now safe, the school still needs to be prepared for students and staff .
The school district said grade nine and newcomer students will head back Thursday, while all other grades will return to class Sept. 11.
According to the school district, the construction was part of the school’s $14.1 million capital improvement plan.
