Teen and young man drown in Harrison Lake

Agassiz RCMP say a 16-year-old and a 24-year-old have drowned in Harrison Lake.

Police were called at about 6 p.m. Sunday after a report of a possible drowning. Three people were reported to be in distress in the lake but witnesses were able to pull one of them to safety.

But the 16 and 24-year-old were last seen about 70 feet from the shore.

S/Sgt. Stephen Vrolyk said both young men were from the Lower Mainland.

“It’s my understanding that they were not very experienced swimmers.”

Search and rescue was called and attempts were made to find the young men but they were not seen again.

At this time, members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team are on site, and have recovered the two deceased men.

Tarun – who didn’t want his last name to be published – was at Harrison Lake on Sunday when search and rescue crews arrived at the beach.

“I just saw the entire beach was looking out into the water. Everyone was mostly quiet but then I saw that there was one boat just combing the waters looking for bodies for a while. We stayed for another 20 minutes and they couldn’t find anyone.”

He said a lot of people on the beach were surprised and confused.

The victims names are not being released at this time but it has been confirmed they were related as uncle and nephew.

This incident comes after firefighters were called out to rescue seven tubers in North Vancouver after they became stuck in the Capilano River Sunday night.

Three men also had to be rescued at Buntzen Lake Sunday when darkness fell and they became lost.
